TIPS
Artwork is an essential detail in home styling.
If done properly it can add colour, scale and visual interest to a room.
TIP Artwork should be placed in a focal point – use furniture as a guideline.
TIP Don't cluster very large artwork with smaller pieces. Left alone, a larger piece will have more impact.
TIP Hang artwork at the same level in a room. This will balance the space and will be more pleasing to the eye.
TIP Hang artwork leaving approximately 6" to 8" between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the frame.
TIP Hang artwork leaving approximately 10" to 12' between the top of a table and the bottom of the frame.
FLOWERS
Flowers are the perfect finishing touch! The right floral choices will lend colour, fragrance and life to each room.
Local flower shops and corner markets are the best source for affordable blooms.
TIP If you aren’t confident in your arranging skills, ask the floral staff to assemble the arrangements for you.
TIP Select hearty varieties that will last at least one week. Varieties with thick or woody stocks are best. Examples: hydrangea, lilies and orchids.
TIP To help bouquets to last longer, re-cut all stems and mash any woody stocks prior to placing them in warm water.
TIP Don’t forget to think about your exterior landscaping. Add flowers and plants for visual interest and adorn the front steps with a welcoming arrangement.
TIP Use the colour scheme of the room as inspiration for your floral choices.
TIP Floral arrangements are accents and should be kept simple – a single palm placed in a skinny vase is sometimes all you need to adorn a bathroom.
ORGANIZING
A well-organized home illustrates how the property functions to meet the needs of everyday life.
The extra effort to get organized will not only help your property to show well, it will assist you in preparing for your move.
TIP Pare down your belongings to those that are used on an everyday basis. Use this opportunity to donate or recycle unused goods.
TIP In storage rooms/garages, group like-items e.g. sporting goods, tools, lawn equipment and clothing. Use bins to house smaller items.
TIP In clothes closets, organize items as you’d use them. Group blouses and shirts together, followed by pants and skirts etc. Finally, organize the items in each grouping by colour.
TIP Bathrooms vanities and linen closets can get unruly. Dispose of any items that are past their expiry date. Group like items in baskets e.g. hair care product and tools, make-up, medicine and first aid. Stack towels and bedding by size and colour.
TIP Bookcases are essential storage areas and can also look quite graphic if well-organized. Line books by height. Stack books that are too wide for the shelves. Add a few ornaments for visual interest e.g. sculptures, small picture frames and bookends.
